How to respond to a break up text?

How to respond to a break up text?

Breaking up with someone is not easy. People don’t want to hurt the feelings of someone they once cared about so much, but that’s inevitable. So the best we can do is to choose the best way to break up with them.

However, not everyone is so considerate and kind. Maybe your now-ex-partner wasn’t so thoughtful or caring and simply chose to break things off via text. If this is the case, then you must have gotten brokenhearted and don’t even know how to respond to such a text. If this is the case then here are some ideas and suggestions to help you formulate a good response.

How to respond to a breakup text in 5 steps?

1. Thank them for the information and move on:

Believe it or not, many people end a romantic relationship by simply ghosting their partner and ignoring all their attempts at contact. So, if your partner decided to break up with you via text, you should at least be grateful for that little effort and not get offended.

So try to look at the positive side of things. At least you don’t need to spend one more minute thinking that you’re taken rather than single when your partner actually disappeared into the sunset with the full intention to forget about your existence.

Of course, breaking up over text is not the best way to do it. It shows that they didn’t care enough to have a final talk with their partner in person. It also shows that they are hoping that you won’t fight for the relationship and just leave them be. However, it’s normal to feel the urge to reply, so you could thank them for letting you know and not having left you in the dark, so you can move on right in that minute.

2. Try to set a meeting with them in person:

The reason why breaking up over text is one of the worst ways to end a relationship is because you are denying your partner the opportunity to get closure. When someone receives a break-up text their mind is filled with questions that simply cannot be fully answered over text.

Breaking up with someone is never a pleasant experience, but there are ways of making it easy. One of those ways is by having a final talk in person. When you meet with your soon-to-be ex in person you can use all the time you want to talk things over. They can clearly explain why they no longer wish to be in the relationship and you have the freedom to ask all the questions you need to get closure.

So, if your ex sent you a break-up text and you can’t get closure, think about asking them if it would possible for you to meet in person. They may say no as that could be the reason why they broke up through text in the first place. So if they seem reluctant, you can clarify that you don’t want to change their mind about it, but only understand their decision.

3. Ask them if they’re sure they’re not making a rash decision:

Because sending a break-up text is easier than talking with the person face to face or over the phone, it’s also easy to send it without thinking things over properly. If you think that this decision came out of the blue, you might be right and you should tell them exactly how you feel. This way you won’t have any regrets later.

However, you need to be aware of the fact that your reply might come off as if you are not taking their decision seriously and that you just think they are overreacting. This could be very frustrating to someone who already stated that they want to break things off.

No one likes to hear that they’re wrong about what they think they want, so you need to measure your words carefully. You could tell them that this decision seems to have been taken very fast and maybe things should be discussed first between you two before your partner takes such a life-altering step.

4. Ask them if they are seeing someone else:

Your partner might have sent you a break-up text because they are already moving on with someone else and don’t want to be judged by you. The thing is that, if they are indeed already seeing someone else, your partner knows that they are an easy target for your judgment because they didn’t wait to break up with you first.

To make things clear and to take that option out of the list of explanations you should reply by asking if they are interested in someone else or if they already got involved with someone new. You should do this because if their answer is yes, you know that there’s no need to try to save that relationship. But again, even if it’s true your partner may not admit to it so easily.

If you get lucky and your partner tells the truth, you wouldn’t be left spending your time trying to think of ways you could get your ex back because you would know they are interested in someone else.

If there is truly nobody else then, you know there’s a chance to talk things over and convince them to rethink their decision, because their heart doesn’t belong to another person yet.

5. Ask for an explanation:

Usually, many guys break up with their partners over text and they obviously have their reasons for doing so. You may think that a guy who would do such a thing would at least spend a lot of time composing a big text to explain all his reasons, but it’s quite the opposite.

Most guys that break up through text simply don’t have a good reason why they want to end things, or at least they cannot put it into words. This can be very frustrating for the person who receives the text as it doesn’t make it easy to move on.

If your partner sends you a break-up text the most common reply is asking why they took such a decision. If they seem annoyed by your insistent questions try telling them that you feel it’s unfair that only they get to move on with closure and you don’t. Hopefully, they will understand your side and explain their motives.
